The wait is almost over. One of India’s most anticipated highway projects — the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway — is set to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 14, 2026. For millions of Delhi residents who travel to Uttarakhand, this changes everything.

The Big Date — April 14, 2026

The much-awaited Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, a six-lane access-controlled Greenfield project, is set for inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 14.

A senior National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) official confirmed the date. The inauguration ceremony is planned to take place at the Forest Research Institute (FRI) in Dehradun, and preparations are underway in full swing.

According to sources, six helipads are being constructed along the route for PM Modi’s arrival — three near the Ganeshpur toll plaza and three more closer to Dehradun. Reports also indicate that the Prime Minister may drive along the elevated section of the expressway during the inauguration event, and may also visit the Maa Daat Kali Temple nearby.

The Big Number — Delhi to Dehradun in 2.5 Hours

This is the headline statistic that changes everything for Delhi residents.

The expressway will reduce the travel time from the current 5–6 hours to just 2.5–3 hours. At a designated speed limit of 100 kmph, it will also reduce the distance from the current 250-km route (via Meerut-Muzaffarnagar-Roorkee) to just 210 km.

Current Route

New Expressway

Distance

~250 km

~210 km

Travel Time

5–6 hours

2.5–3 hours

Speed Limit

Varies

100 kmph

Road Type

Mixed traffic

6-lane access-controlled

Route — Where Does the Expressway Go?

The expressway starts from Delhi’s Akshardham area and passes through Baghpat, Shamli, and Saharanpur before reaching Dehradun.

The project has been developed in three phases:

Phase I (Brownfield): 32-km, 6-lane stretch between Akshardham in Delhi and the Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE) Junction

Phase II (Greenfield): Between EPE Junction in Delhi and Ganeshpur near Saharanpur bypass

Phase III (Greenfield): Expressway stretch between Ganeshpur near Saharanpur bypass and Dehradun — including the landmark elevated corridor

For those travelling from Delhi — the journey begins right at Akshardham, one of Delhi’s most recognisable landmarks. This means residents of East Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad and nearby areas have direct, easy access to the expressway entry point.

Asia’s Longest Wildlife Corridor — The Crown Jewel

The highlight of this project is the 12-kilometre-long elevated road section from Ganeshpur to Datkali, which is being hailed as Asia’s longest green corridor.

This elevated stretch has been specially designed to protect the Rajaji National Park and wildlife movement. Instead of widening the road — which would have cut through the forest — engineers opted for an elevated structure, allowing animals to move freely underneath while vehicles travel above.

This is the second highway in India to have a wildlife protection corridor, after NH-44. It represents a genuinely innovative approach to highway engineering that balances infrastructure development with ecological conservation — a model that is being studied internationally.

At the entry point near Datkali, a new tunnel has been constructed alongside the existing one, allowing seamless two-way traffic. A flyover will connect the tunnel to the RTO checkpoint and link to the Dehradun-Haridwar Highway.

Special Overpass for Temple Pilgrims

One unique feature that reflects the human-centred planning of this expressway — a separate 700-metre-long curved overpass has been built for pilgrims visiting the Datkali Temple, at a cost of ₹14 crore.

This ensures pilgrims’ safety by eliminating the risk of crossing the high-speed expressway. It is a small but thoughtful addition that shows the planners considered the daily lives of local residents who would be living alongside this new infrastructure.

Project Key Facts — ₹12,000 Crore Infrastructure

Detail

Info

Total Length

~210–213 km

Project Cost

~₹12,000–13,000 crore

Type

6-lane, access-controlled Greenfield

Speed Limit

100 kmph

Start Point

Akshardham Temple, Delhi

End Point

Dehradun

States Covered

Delhi → Uttar Pradesh (Baghpat, Shamli, Saharanpur) → Uttarakhand

Foundation Stone

December 4, 2021 by PM Modi

Inauguration

April 14, 2026 (Expected)

Wildlife Corridor

12 km elevated section, Asia’s longest

Tunnel

340-metre Dhatkali tunnel near Dehradun

Safety Features — Smart Highway Technology

The expressway has been equipped with modern surveillance systems to ensure safe high-speed travel.

Overspeeding will be automatically detected, and challans will be issued directly from the control room — no police check posts required. Lay-by points have been created on both sides of the elevated road for vehicles to park safely in case of breakdowns.

Additional safety and convenience features include:

Food courts every 30 km along the expressway

EV charging stations for electric vehicle drivers

Smart parking for 3,000 vehicles at designated points

CCTV-based automatic ticketing at all toll points

Emergency helipads built along the route

Tourism Impact — Mussoorie, Rishikesh & Haridwar Just Got Much Closer

For Delhi’s travelling population, this expressway is transformational beyond just Delhi-Dehradun. It dramatically improves access to some of India’s most beloved tourist destinations:

Mussoorie — the Queen of Hills, just 30 km beyond Dehradun, now accessible from Delhi in ~3.5 hours.

Rishikesh — the yoga capital of the world, now reachable in under 3 hours from Delhi via the expressway.

Haridwar — India’s most visited pilgrimage city, now less than 3 hours from the capital.

Jim Corbett National Park — accessible via Haridwar road in under 4 hours from Delhi.

The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway is expected to boost tourism in Uttarakhand, especially in destinations like Mussoorie, Rishikesh, and Haridwar. Faster connectivity will also benefit trade and industry, particularly in the Doon Valley and surrounding regions.

What’s Still Left — Construction Update

The construction of the expressway has faced multiple delays since the foundation stone was laid in December 2021. As of now, the NHAI has confirmed that four packages of the expressway are fully ready.

Some sections of the expressway, including the stretch from Akshardham in Delhi to the Loni border and from Loni to Khekra in Baghpat, have already been open for trial runs. Officials stated that only minor finishing work remains across the full stretch.

The Saharanpur stretch was undergoing road signage and lane marking work as of January 2026, and the entire stretch is now expected to be ready for the April 14 inauguration.

What This Means for Delhi Commuters — Before and After

Before the Expressway: A weekend trip to Mussoorie from Delhi meant waking up at 4 AM, battling traffic through Meerut, Muzaffarnagar and Roorkee, stopping every few kilometres at traffic lights, and arriving 6–7 hours later exhausted.

After the Expressway: The same trip becomes a comfortable 3-hour drive on a world-class access-controlled highway — no traffic signals, no trucks cutting in, no potholes, and a speed limit of 100 kmph throughout.

This is not just a road. It is a fundamentally different quality of life for millions of Delhi families who travel to Uttarakhand for weekends, festivals, pilgrimages and summer vacations.

The corridor is also expected to ease traffic congestion in the National Capital Territory and reduce the burden on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway and other connecting highways.
